Overview

Highly efficient buffer solution for increasing alkalinity (KH).

It helps to increase pH stability in the aquarium by raising its alkalinity.

It provides a source of carbonates, which make up the majority of the weight of aragonite, the mineral produced by barrier-building organisms as skeletal material.

Prolonged feeding increases the pH until it reaches 8.3, at which point the pH remains unchanged and only the alkalinity increases.

Stronger than the 50% of most competing products.

Free of phosphates, silicates and organic matter.

Formulated by a marine scientist.

Technical Background

Alkalinity, also called carbonate hardness or buffering capacity, is essentially a means of quantifying the pH stability of a solution, such as aquarium water. Alkalinity is of extreme importance in a marine aquarium because of the way it influences pH. In an aquarium, weak acids obtained from the respiration of oxygen and the decomposition of organic matter gradually decrease alkalinity. If left unchecked, alkalinity falls below the critical level and pH starts to fluctuate more widely than is advisable (a daily pH variation of +/-0.2 is normal in a marine aquarium), causing stress to living organisms. Alkalinity is also consumed by reef-building organisms that use it to form aragonite (composed of approximately 60% of its weight of carbonates).

Maintaining alkalinity in a marine aquarium between 7 and 12 dKH (2.5-4.3 meq/L) will normally keep the pH within the desired range. The rate at which alkalinity decreases in a marine aquarium is determined by the population density of reef-building organisms, the type of light, water flow and other biological, physical and chemical parameters; therefore, each aquarium will have different requirements for carbonate supplementation. Once the consumption of alkalinity in the aquarium has been established, it will be easy to calculate the right dosage of this product. It is recommended to use a salt with a suitable alkalinity (not too high) and with an appropriate concentration of major, minor and trace elements in order to recreate the essential parameters of natural seawater in the aquarium and maintain a stable ionic balance.

All Brightwell Aquatics liquid supplements are made from purified water and high-purity materials.

Instructions and Guidelines

Beginners: Shake the bottle well before use. Add 5 ml of product per approx. 113.56 litres of aquarium water daily until the desired alkalinity is reached, then dose daily or weekly as required to maintain alkalinity in a range of 7-12 dKH. When used in this way, 250 ml of the product treats up to approximately 5678 litres of water.

Experts: Determine the alkalinity in the aquarium using a precision test before supplementing. Shake the product thoroughly before each use. Each ml of Alkalin8.3 will increase the alkalinity in 3.785 litres of water by approximately 3.1 dKH (1.1 meq/L). If the initial alkalinity in the aquarium is below 7 dKH (2.5 meq/L), administer the product at a maximum dosage of 5 ml per 37.85 litres per day until the desired KH is achieved, then dose daily or weekly as required. For minor alkalinity supplements, add 5ml of Alkalin8.3 per every 113.56 litres or as required to keep KH within an appropriate range. Always try to keep alkalinity within +/- 1 dKH.

To determine the consumption of carbonates once the desired alkalinity is reached, measure the value at the same time each day for a period of 1-2 weeks. To determine the daily dosage (preferable to weekly dosing) required to maintain Calcium levels, make an estimate of the volume of water present in the whole aquarium system, divide the drop in Calcium level by 3.1 (if measuring alkalinity in dKH, otherwise, if measuring in meq/L divide by 1.1), multiply this number by the volume of water present in the system to obtain the daily dosage required (in ml) to maintain a stable alkalinity level. Daily dosing allows more stable KGe pH levels (and a more natural environment) than weekly dosing, which causes a peak in alkalinity immediately after dosing and a gradual drop over the course of the week.

Note: If the pH does not reach the desired levels by using this product as recommended, such as when gas exchange in the aquarium is insufficient, it may be necessary to use a pH-boosting product (such as Brightwell Aquatics pH+). Follow the manufacturer's instructions for using such a product, regardless of which one you use.

Attention: Contains carbonate and bicarbonate salts; harmful if swallowed. If swallowed, drink water and contact a doctor. May cause eye and skin irritation. Rinse with water for 15 minutes in case of contact with eyes and contact a doctor. In case of contact with skin, rinse thoroughly with water. Keep out of reach of children. Not suitable for human use.
