Overview

Removes chloramines, chlorine, ammonia and nitrites in tap and/or aquarium water.

It can be used to neutralise Iodine in the event of an overdose in the aquarium.

Used as directed, it is safe for direct use in all marine and freshwater aquaria.

Free of phosphates and silicates.

Formulated by a marine scientist.

Technical Background

Erāse-Cl can be used to prepare the water for use in the aquarium (e.g. when changing water or topping up evaporated water), as well as during periods when ammonia and/or nitrite concentrations become measurable (ammonia and nitrite concentrations should remain unmeasurable in stable aquaria with a mature biological filter, except at times when new animals are added or for some reason there is an increased presence of organic material). Erāse-Cl should not be regarded as a substitute for adequate filtration or maintenance of filtration, however it can be used as required to prevent irritation of aquarium inhabitants caused by ammonia or nitrite. A balanced aquarium is one in which the rate of entry of organic material into the system corresponds to the rate of removal by filtration methods; it is natural for a system to become unbalanced for short periods after the addition of new animals, disturbance of biological filtration, change of feeding habits, etc., however the system should return to equilibrium within days. If ammonia or nitrite concentrations are persistently measurable with an accurate test, test for the presence of these substances in the water source, e.g. tap water or water from the purifier. If they are not present then it should be ensured that the input rate of organic material is reduced, the filter capacity is increased or even the inhabitants are moved to a larger system. Chronic ammonia and nitrite levels can gradually weaken fish and invertebrates, often leading to illness and potentially death.

Erāse-Cl immediately binds Iodine in the event of overdose (characterised by sagging and rapidly degrading tissues in corals, tridacne, and other sessile invertebrates, as well as by unusual behaviour and/or death of fish and motile invertebrates), reducing its harmful potential for animals and the beneficial bacteria that make up the biological filter.

NoteIt is strongly recommended that enthusiasts using Iodine supplements similar to Lugol (typically very strong) always have a bottle of Erāse-Cl on hand, in case of accidental overdose.

Instructions and Guidelines

To treat the water of rubiquitous: add 5ml of product per 75.7 litres (20 gallons) of tap water to remove chloramines and ammonia; when used in this way, Erāse-Cl will treat up to 6 ppm chlorine, 3 ppm chloramines or 1 ppm ammonia.

To treat aquarium water: Determine the ammonia concentration in the aquarium using an accurate test with the ammonia reagent salicylate. Add 5 ml per 75.7 litres (20 gallons) of water in the whole system for every ppm of ammonia measured with the test. Allow 10 minutes, then test the ammonia concentration in the aquarium again and repeat the treatment if necessary.

Test for ammonia: when using this product, be sure to measure ammonia with a salicylated ammonia test rather than with Nessler's reagent; Nessler's reagent will give false positives in the ammonia reading because of the way it interacts with the active components contained in Erāse-Cl.

To treat Iodine overdoses: if you suspect that you have overdosed on Iodine in the aquarium (e.g. due to accidental misuse), add 10 ml of Erāse-Cl for every 75.7 litres (20 gallons) in an area of intense water flow; this will neutralise free Iodine (i.e. not in ionic form, such as iodide or iodate, or in bound form).

Observe the animals in the aquarium for no less than 15 minutes from that time. Erāse-Cl binds iodine at a rate that is only limited by the reaction time and the level of water circulation in the aquarium: the faster the product is administered after an overdose and the faster the circulation in the system, the better results will be obtained from this product. It is not claimed that this product prevents damage or reverses damage that has already been inflicted on animals or biological filtration. This product is particularly useful for those hobbyists who use Lugol's solution or other strong sources of Iodine in an attempt to benefit aquarium inhabitants. Do not exceed total Iodine concentrations above 0.10 ppm in marine aquaria at all times.

Attention: Keep out of reach of children. Not suitable for human use. In case of ingestion, contact the poison centre.
