Technical background:

Brightwell Aquatics GarlicPower contains only raw garlic extract. Garlic has long been attributed with various medicinal properties, now clinical research is beginning to support some of those claims belonging to popular belief. It was initially assumed that the active ingredient in garlic was a compound called Alliicin, consisting of the combination of an amino acid called Alliin with the enzyme Allinase, which occurs when garlic is damaged (e.g. cut, processed, bitten, etc.). Research has shown that Alliicin is an unstable compound, with a very short lifespan, and begins to degrade immediately after it is produced (a process accelerated by heat and counteracted by refrigeration, but not sufficiently to ensure its presence in a garlic extract product); the result of this decay process is a series of compounds called diallyl sulphides. These compounds also exhibit beneficial properties, and although not as effective as alliicin, their use in medical treatments and the exact nature of the benefits they provide are the subject of ongoing research. 

In aquaria, the use of garlic is often associated with an improvement in fish health, particularly where there are parasitic problems. This product is not to be considered a medicine. Garlic has been shown to stimulate the ingestion of food in newly introduced and/or picky-feeding fish; soaking food with a small amount of garlic extract for several minutes and administering it will be very rewarding. Although garlic can increase the palatability of food, it should never be intended as a means of keeping fish in the tank whose chances of life in captivity are poor due to their special dietary requirements (e.g. many varieties of corallivorous butterfly fish, spongivorous angel fish etc.). Always inform yourself before introducing fish into the aquarium about their dietary and environmental requirements.

Instructions and guidelines:

To enrich feeds (recommended): Shake the product well before use. Place the feed in a clean container and add Garlic Power ad sufficient quantity to impregnate it. Allow at least 5 minutes before feeding, allowing the product to be fully absorbed by the feed. Liquid suspension feed can be enhanced by adding 1ml (approx. 8 drops) of Garlic Power for every 10ml of suspension; shake to mix and allow 5 minutes before feeding. Maximum benefit will be gained from each liquid food suspension when it is administered in a targeted manner to the organism it is intended to feed rather than poured into the water stream and allowed to drip causally through the aquarium. After a period of several months, the dosage can be increased by 50% if desired while the water quality is monitored and maintained within the required parameters. Check the water quality carefully each time, making corrections as necessary.

Direct administration into the aquarium: Shake the product well. Add 5 ml of product for every 189 litres (50 gallons) of aquarium water every other day, or give half the dosage every day. When used in this way, 125 ml treats up to 4732 litres (1250 gallons) of water. 

Garlic Power is not claimed to have any medicinal effect. However, fish suffering from ectoparasitosis benefit from the addition of garlic to their diet. If ectoparasites are present Garlic Power could be added to the feed as directed, and also dosed directly into the water at half the recommended dosage. It is generally recommended that Garlic Power be used either as a supplement to the food or as an additive directly into the aquarium, but not both ways except in the case mentioned above.
